Cabling and Wiring
ITS installs and repairs copper and optical fiber communications cabling for university owned or leased facilities in greater Austin (used for data/Ethernet, voice, CATV, security, other). Inter-building and inter-campus connectivity is also part of this service. Department TSCs (Technical Support Coordinators) will generally make requests for copper and fiber cables after working with ITS Networking (if you need network assistance for switches and Wireless Access Points see Department Networks to request service).
A work order number will be assigned to requests within 2-3 days of being submitted, and completed within 4 weeks, backlog permitting (see below).
For trouble associated with Cabling, email Cabling & Construction at its-cabling-construction@utlists.utexas.edu.
Per Network Operations Manual 6.9.3.2 Building Cable Pathways:
Media cabling through building pathways shall only be installed or modified by ITS Networking and approved contractors. Contractors must be vetted and approved by ITS Networking, follow university building codes and standards, and adhere to ITS Networking’s inspections. ITS Networking may approve Unit staff to install specialized media with proper training and post-installation inspections.
Rearranging your office space? It might be necessary to move your cabling.
Backlog
The current data/voice copper cabling backlog is four (4) weeks; this includes two (2) weeks for Environmental Health and Safety sampling if required. Seasonal work loads (such as fall back to class, large campus events, summer construction projects, availability of supplies, etc.) can cause additional delays in request fulfillment. We apologize for the delays, and will advise customers what those delays may be when work requests are submitted. Should you need the work completed sooner, overtime is an option. For questions or an estimate for overtime, please contact the Inside Plant Cabling Shop directly at (512) 475-7092 for data/voice work order scheduling, or the Outside Plant Shop at (512) 471-1550 for fiber installations and scheduling. Or email Cabling & Construction at its-cabling-construction@utlists.utexas.edu.
ITS runs Ethernet and fiber-optic data cables for data, voice, or video for offices, labs, and other facilities at the main UT campus and at the PRC. The physical-layer infrastructure for the university's networking services, departmental networks, underground copper cable plant, and microwave radio links to other university sites in Austin are also part of this service.
